Party, Party, Party!!!

It's been a great year for the runners of SBRR and who do we have to thank for that...Mike and Rusty, of course! Guess who have birthdays this month???? Mike and Rusty, of course! If that doesn't scream party, what does???

Join us on Sunday, November 20, 2011, from 3pm-7pm for a thank you/birthday celebration at Jim Sloan's house. It will be potluck style so here is a suggestion of what to bring:

Last Name starts with:
A - G - Appetizer
H - L - Main Dish
M - S - Side Dish
T- Z - Dessert

We will provide plates, utensils, cups, etc. We will also have sodas and water but please bring your alcoholic beverage of choice. All family members and significant others are welcome but I would warn them about the extreme amount of running talk that will most certainly occur. :-)

If you DID NOT receive the Evite, please email Brooke Powell(brooklyn0223@gmail.com) if you can attend and let her know how many people will come with you.

We hope you can make it and help us say thank you and happy birthday to our coaches!

SBIM still need help....PLEASE:)

SBIM still needs HELP! If you can help please let me know asap. THANK YOU!!

5 people at packet pick up saturday Nov 12th at the Page Center, 4540 Hollister Ave from 5:45am to 7:15am. You park at San Marcos HS by the tennis courts and walk to Page Center.

Sag wagon Driver from 6am to 1:15pm to follow the last runner and be available for communication with medical and race Director if needed (Course time limit is 13:44/mi or 6hrs from 7:15am)

SBIM has 8 folks trying to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials (4 men in the Half trying for sub 1:05 or 4:57/mi pace and 4 men in the Full marathon trying for sub 2:19) That being said SBIM has over 63% women! This truly is the beginning of something great in our community and will only get better but we need your help as always:)

All other non marathoners run the 4miles at Threshold effort from Leadbetter to Modoc/Las Positas, then jog back to the start.
PLEASE WEAR YOUR SBRR UNIFORMS IF YOU HAVE THEM AS WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A TEAM PICTURE AFTER OUR WARMUP BEFORE THE HARD STUFF! It'll be great to have a team picture.

Saturday 10/15/11

Hi, we'll be meeting at the foothill School on Ribera dr and Cathedral Oaks tomorrow at
6:30am.
SBIM folks will warm up 40 min then do the Pebble Hill loop starting from the 1mile mark
On that loop (1mile from the normal pebble hill loop start line) and do 2 1/2 loop for ~10.5 miles total at marathon pace.

NYC marathoners will do their 40 min warmup and do 3full loops for just under 13 miles at marathon pace.
CIM folks will warmup 40 min, 2full loops ~8.5 miles at Marathon pace.

All others not marathoning will do one loop at Threshold effort (put yourself in one marathon pace group higher than you would normally be in as you should be at 90% effort while the marathoners should be at 80% effort...understand?:)

See you tomorrow!

saturday 1/8/11

Hi, we'll be meeting at the Vieja Valley School tomorrow. All folks running SBIM (5 weeks away) OR NYC (4 weeks away) we ask you to start your pre-marathon pace part of the workout at 6am. Don't bother coming back to the school until 7am which will give you an hr "warm up"...so between 5-8miles depending on your speed...we'll be running from ~19.5mi mark on the SBIM course to the Cliff/Oliver ~24mi mark and back to the start which will be ~9miles at marathon Pace.

All others meet at 6:30am as usual for your 30min warmup and you will run a Threshold/tempo run from the same starting point to Cliff/Oliver then jog back to the start.

see you tomorrow!

Friday, September 30, 2011

Saturday 10/1/11, NIKE at SBRUNNING

We'll be meeting at SBRunning Co. 6:30am. Nike will be here and you will have a chance to wear test their shoes. No need for anyone to get there early for more miles. We are warming up from the store less than a mile up to fairview and Cath Oaks and starting our marathon pace effort from the 12mile mark on the SBIM course....see map above....and going all the way to the 20mile mark, then running back. We'll take your water/carbs and be at the 6mi (18 on course), 8mile (20mi on course). This will be a great chance to visualize starting the marathon on marathon day with no warmup. So let your body warmup over the first couple miles then get into your pace after that.
If you are not racing/training for a Fall marathon, then you will go 2miles out and 2miles back (first 2 at 80% effort ~marathon pace, last 2miles at 90% effort ~high end threshold) on Cathedral Oaks.
Good Luck to those racing the Santa Monica 5000 this weekend!

Andrea Mclarty will have her Core Strength for runners Class at 6:15pm to 7:15pm at SBRunning Co in Goleta (so many of you ask us about what exercises they should do to prevent injuries, well here is a great opportunity to find out and be guided through the right stuff. Go to Drea's Class, it's a great one!)

Mike and Rusty will be speaking after Drea's class from 7:15pm to 8:15pm talking about the Boston marathon Course specifically (how to run the course, what to expect in Boston: weather, clothing, pacing, mental games and any other questions you have we will address) and all are welcome.

Saturday 4/2/11

Hi, This is the end of week #10/12in the Boston/SaltLake City Marathon buildup and most are running 8miles at Marathon Pace.
We will meet at the Vieja valley School at 6:30am.

Marathoners run a 5mile warmup, then starting at the bike path entrance by the school, head toward Modoc to Las Positas and Cliff Dr to Oliver (~4miles), Turn around at Oliver and return to the School for your 8miles, then 5miles cool down for your 18miles.

Others not doing an April marathon, you have the same 5mile warmup, with a 4mile "Tempo" or "Threshold" run (~25sec/mile slower than your 10k race pace). So run to Oliver at that effort then use your return trip as your cool down.

Rusty will be in Carlsbad for the Carlsbad 5K and to spread the Word on the Select Staffing SBIM, Half and Relay and Mike will be racing the Tough Enough Relay along with some other SBRR/SBAA runners. Good Luck to Tim Strand at Carlsbad where he looks to be in the best 5K shape of his life! Good Luck to Tough Enough Runners!

SBRR at San Francisco Half Marathon

Fun had by all on a great course. If you are looking for a fast course, this is the course to run! We had some phenominal efforts put forth by SBAA members that included some hard core eating, shopping, oh yea there was a race too! Claire Krock fell sick and was unable to make it to San Francisco. Poor Brooke must have caught Claire's cold last and gutted through it to finish a strong race. Thanks ladies to a great race weekend!

Chris Latham 1:39, Katie Kirkmire-Vining 1:42, Carrie Dent 1:49, Brooke Powell 1:52, Tamara Berndt 1:56 (6 Feb)

Congrats to Craig Prater!

Craig ran a beautifully executed 3:22 (sub 3:30 goal) at the Surf City Marathon! Super job Craig!!

CONGRATULATIONS SBAA SBRR RUNNERS!

What a GREAT weekend for our runners!
Some highlights:

USATF Cross-Country Nationals:

Our SBAA Team came in a very solid 4th place at the Master's Nationals Saturday, Feb 5th. This race is one of the toughest races in the country as people who race X/C are generally ready to suffer from start to finish and since it's run on grass up and down hills, a runners time or pace is not important so it's simply about beating as many people as you can and being as fit as possible to withstand the terrain and surges on soft surface. It's grueling and so much fun when your legs give out crossing the finish. We had a few of these performances which made it even more special.

Drea ran in one of the most competitive fields possible in the country today and was 42nd. Everyone who ran Drea's race was the real deal. She ran an incredibly tough mental race after having the stomach virus for two weeks. Her toughness is inspiring.

Mens results:

Rusty Snow, 4th overall (3rd in age group)
Eric Forte, 28th (16th in age group)
Tim Strand, 34th (20th age group)
Mike Swan, 44th (23rd age group)
Ignacio Jimenez, 71st (2nd in age group)
Joe Macphee, 87th (32nd age group)
John Brennand, 124th (1st in age group)

Sunday 2/6:

Mike Shalhoub won the Superbowl 4 miler today running a superb race! I was lucky enough to see Mike come back from way and with 1/2mile to go make a brilliant move taking a tangent that took him from 50meters behind Todd Booth to within 10meters (yes, in a road race you can take the shortest possible line as this is how all certified courses are measured.)
Mike caught Todd and ran a 21:19 (57 second PR on this course!)
Jamie Hagaar also ran a superb race coming from way back and running a big PR at 22:10 and beating some runners he hasn't beaten before.
Ricky ran well since he's not fit yet after his stress fracture.
Kent Harris was 3rd in his age group and was 47 seconds better than last year!
Phil Gans was 24 seconds faster than last year with John "the Unit" Nelson right behind him
Jessica Douglas ran a solid race coming in 2nd @24:41

It was a beautiful weekend with some great running.

See you all Tuesday

Saturday 2/5/11 Practice

Hi All,
Mike and I will be racing in San Diego at the National Cross-Country Champs along with Joe Mac, Eric Forte, John Brennand, Tim Strand and Drea Mclarty so we will not be at practice. Also, another group of SBRR folks will be running the Super Bowl 4miler on Sunday so our group should be a bit smaller Saturday.
All others should meet at Leadbetter Beach and warm up for 40min, then start your Marathon Pace run at the Harbor (start where the bike path meets the harbor parking lot up to Elise Way is exactly 2 miles) and run up to lazy acres to Elise Way and turn around and run back down for 4miles total.

Boston Marathoners and Salt lake City Marathoners when you get back to the Harbor, keep going one more mile as you are doing a 5mile Marathon Pace run in your 15miler for the day (for those I coach...if Mike writes your schedule, you know what to do)

Alexis run the 40min warmup, do the 4mile tempo, then 2miles cool down for 10miles total.
Ruth same as Alexis unless Mike told you something different.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE THIS WEEKEND!
